Environment Conservation

Environment provides favorable condition for the existence, survival and development of living organisms and natural resources are the means for satisfying human and social requirements in a given space and time. The basic amenities for living organisms are provided by natural resources, which are preserved in a good environment. These resources provide us food, fodder, fuel, medicine and clothes, and hence sustain life in the planet.

In the past, these amenities were pure, virgin, undisturbed, uncontaminated and basically most hospitable for living organisms. But the situation today is just the reverse, because of urban - industrial technological revolution and speedy exploitation of every bit of natural resources. Rapid industrialization has left with us polluted rivers, polluted air, natural calamities, contaminated soil, depleted wildlife and exhausted natural resources.

The present scenario reflects an alarming situation of grave environmental crisis and ecological imbalance. Though there is a greater awareness of environmental issues today, but attention is largely drawn to global issues rather than local issues of environmental degradation. But these local issues play an important role and if given consideration and attention can help in creating a clean and safe environment for the poor communities in rural areas.

Vasundhara believes in local (community) management of natural resources, and increased stake of local people over the resources. Thus this operating philosophy of Vasundhara provides the motto to work for environmental conservation.

Responding to the urgent need of addressing environmental threats and problems arising from unsustainable developmental practices, Vasundhara has entered into the arena of Environmental Conservation through Environmental Quality Monitoring and Environmental Impact Assessment studies. An environmental Laboratory for conducting Water and Soil Quality Monitoring has been established. Considering the non-existence of a database for ready use and reference, we have come up with a first of its kind database on Mines and Industries in Orissa which is going to be immensely useful for researchers and individuals interested in environmental conservation in the state .

On the left hand corner, place two headings -
1 Database on Mining
(Include Status Paper on Mining as the 11 th item under this heading itself)

2 Reports & Documents
On clicking this option, a new page must pop up containing the following links:
1   Report on sponge iron plants of Orissa
2   Ecological, socio-economic and health impacts Assessment due to coal mining – A case study   of Talabira Coal Mines of Orissa
3   Ecological, socio-economic and health impacts Assessment due to Aluminium Smelter Plant –   A case study of Hindalco Smelter Plant of Orissa
